Vita Golod’s monograph The Dual Face of Chinese Nationalism in the Xi Jinping Era: Conflict and Peace in Xinjiang offers a comprehensive analysis of contemporary Chinese nationalism as a central instrument of governance and nation-building. Drawing on discourse analysis of Xi Jinping’s speeches, policy documents, statistical data, fieldwork conducted in Kashgar in 2024, and original survey research, the book examines the interaction of ideology, economic policy, and ethnic governance. Through the Uyghur case in Xinjiang, it conceptualizes Chinese nationalism as possessing a “dual face”: integrative and civilizational on the one hand, disciplinary and assimilationist on the other, assessing its implications for stability, identity, and prospects for peace.
